Taxonomy of the Cixiidae (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha) from the Madeira archipelago

Ninety percent of the Cixiidae Macaronesian archipelagos are endemic. Each archipelago has its own endemics reaching a total 31 taxa. The Madeira comprises five species: Cixius madeirensis China, 1938, C. verticalis Noualhier, 1897, chaoensis Hyalesthes madeires Remane & Hoch, 1986 and H. portonoves 1986. Good knowledge concerning taxonomy, habitat information distribution essential for conservation biodiversity this rich archipelago. However, due to intraspecific variation incomplete descriptions, misidentifications cixiids have been common. In work, taxonomy family is reviewed ecological data based on material collected over more than forty years presented. A new species, wollastoni sp. nov., described. combination, Tachycixius (China, 1938) comb. proposed, record, Pentastiridius leporinus (Linnaeus, 1761), reported. Lectotypes designated verticalis. genital structures latter species depicted first time. All diagnosed, described, photographed illustrated, an identification key provided.
